STMicroelectronics Launches VIPer11B: Tiny, Efficient, and Cost-Effective HV Converters for Up to 8W Applications
STMicroelectronics, a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, has introduced its new VIPer11B off-line high-voltage (HV) converters. These innovative converters are specifically designed to enable the creation of exceptionally tiny, highly efficient, and low-cost power supplies for applications demanding up to 8W. This makes them perfectly suited for a wide array of modern electronic devices, including lighting solutions, smart-home equipment, various appliances, and smart meters.
ST's VIPer11B converters significantly reduce the bill of materials (BOM) through extensive feature integration, simplifying circuit design and minimizing the need for external components. At its heart lies an 800V avalanche-rugged MOSFET, which requires only small snubbing components for protection. An intelligent built-in senseFET provides almost lossless current sensing, eliminating the need for additional external resistors. High-voltage startup circuitry is also integrated directly on-chip, requiring merely an external capacitor for the Vcc supply. Furthermore, a frequency-jittered oscillator is incorporated to minimize any external filtering necessary to meet stringent electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulations, streamlining the design process. Housed in a compact SSOP10 package, these converters are ideal for delivering power in applications where space is at a premium. This is particularly valuable in products with rigidly defined form factors, such as LED-lighting drivers and smart bulbs. The converters also play a crucial role in helping designs meet stringent ecodesign regulations, thanks to their low standby current that cuts no-load power consumption to less than 10 mW and pulse-skipping operation which significantly boosts efficiency at light loads.
Flexibility is another core strength of the VIPer11B series. Its wide Vcc range allows the converter to be supplied either from a transformer auxiliary winding or directly from the output in a non-isolated topology. The VIPer11B can be expertly utilized in various topologies including non-isolated flyback, buck, and buck/boost configurations, as well as isolated flyback with primary-side or secondary-side regulation. For enhanced reliability and robust design, the VIPer11B features comprehensive protection mechanisms: output overload and overvoltage protection with automatic restart, Vcc clamping, thermal shutdown, and soft-start functionality. These features collectively enable designers to build exceptionally strong and reliable power supplies. To cater to diverse power requirements, two variants are available: the VIPer113B, offering a drain-current protection threshold of 370 mA, and the VIPer114B, which provides a higher current limit of 480 mA.
